This site is a beta version of the project promoting the first network of railway lines in continental Europe, it originated from Saint-Etienne towards the Loire River and then the Rhône River in the early 19th century.

For now, the site mainly contains the research and work put online by Histoire et Patrimoine de Saint-Etienne (formerly les Amis du Vieux Saint-Etienne) (www.histoireetpatrimoinedesaintetienne.com).

As the research progresses, you will find here the result of these diverse actions.

As of right now, you can already have access to a quick history of the birth of this first continental railway network ;  the route of the 1827 line between Saint-Etienne and Andrézieux on a modern map and the geo-tracking of the vestige of this heritage (GPS and Google Earth files are available for download).

You can, since Spring 2014, also view and download the track of a sightseeing tour that you can undertake by car or bike, to be as close as possible to the 1827 line, and accompanied by historical reflections.

A space for documentary resources lists the main works published on the question and the documents or digital publications available for consultation on the internet server of the media library of Saint-Etienne.
We will soon be able to offer you a richer documentation, with documents (maps, plans, archives, ...) and links to other resource sites that are particularly rich in this field.
